KDPOF proudly announces the successful completion of the H2020 Project, a considerable EU Research and Innovation program running from 2014 to 2020. KDPOF’s target was to take the next steps into replicating and validating their Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) technology to implement and standardize a robust solution in the automotive industry after having successfully launched and qualified a family of ASICs for the consumer and professional markets. “Our goal was to design, develop, validate, and pre-qualify an ASIC for gigabit communications over POF for automotive applications,” explained Carlos Pardo, CEO and Co-founder of KDPOF. The purpose of the project was to undertake the product development process with a quality approach that guarantees compliance to the automotive industry’s requirements. “The successful development and validation of a gigabit POF transceiver that demonstrates functional, performance, and reliability compliance for automotive applications represents a major breakthrough in a new communications standard for the automotive industry.”

KDPOF generated great interest with their presentation of GEPOF technology at Automotive Ethernet Congress on January 30 and 31, 2018 in Munich, Germany. Electromagnetic noise is a major issue in any electrical power train, both in full electrical or hybrid architectures. It affects the operation of the electronic circuits within the car and countermeasures have to be taken at early stages of the design. The communication bus has to be immune to the electromagnetic noise and, at the same time, comply with the mechanical, temperature, and weight constraints of the overall vehicle. Optical connections with POF provide the optimal means to achieve galvanic isolation while realizing data communications between the domains at the same time.

Japanese National project endorses 1 Gbps POF for Automotive

Exhibiting at IEEE’s Ethernet & IP @ Automotive Technology Day which took place in Paris this year, OGEAR Japanese National project ran a demo of a 1Gbit/s automotive Ethernet stereoscopic ADAS across 15 meters of Plastic Optical Fibre (POF).

The Japanese Automotive Industry led by JASPAR organization is running a three years national funded project to develop the next generation optical networks in automotive. The first step in this race will be 1 Gbps over Plastic Optical Fiber and the chosen technology has been KDPOF´s Gigabit over POF technology.

The advantages of POF over other copper-based alternatives are well shown in the following video from the OGEAR council shown at the latest Paris Ethernet & IP Conference held in September 2016
