KDPOF - the knowledge development for plastic optical fibers
COMPANY PROFILE
KDPOF is a Spanish company located in Madrid whose mission is the development of technology for high capacity communications over Large Core Plastic Optical Fiber (POF), covering from the system definition to the mixed-signal integrated circuits design.
The technology developed by KDPOF is not only a proof of concept of high speed communications over POF. The main objective is the implementation of cost effective electronic circuits that will enable data-rates over POF of more than 1 Gbit/s based on nowadays microelectronics.
Our POF communication technology combines key elements belonging to the state of the art of Digital Communications and Information Theory to provide an adaptive and efficient system able to work over a wide range of optoelectronics and cheap large core fibers.
Our design flow allows us the coupled optimization of all the parts of the system. We develop a coupled design of analog and digital parts to maximize the communication capacity over dispersive large core fibers.
Our design flow and ASIC architecture provides a drastic reduction of the risks, costs and time-to-market.
KDPOF technology provides great improvements in several applications:
•Long reach applications, like industrial Fast Ethernet where the most important objective is to maximize the coverage of 100 Mbps at lengths around 300 meters (using green light) or more than 150 meters (using red light) of standard SI-POF, preserving the electromagnetic interference immunity. Current products provide 100 Mbps up to 50 meters under the link budget requirements demanded by the industrial applications.
•Short reach applications, like home networks, telecom interconnect and automotive networks, where more than 1 Gbps can be provided in the range of 100 meters of standard SI-POF. Current products only provides 1Gbps up to 10 meters and 100 Mbps up to 80 meters for home network applications, and up to 150 Mbps in automotive applications like MOST® (Media Oriented Systems Transport).
